Kayaking in Hudson River for Free

Kayaking in Hudson River for Free

Kayaking is the answer, Who cares what the question is.

She was free in the Wilderness, She was a wanderess, a drop of free water, She belonged to no man and no city.
— Roman Payne

The world’s greatest city hits the pocket too hard, but did you know there are many free things to do in New York City that are absolutely FREE. Out of them, my favorite one is Free Kayaking at Pier 26 organized by Manhattan Community Boathouse. It is 20 minutes of sheer happiness.

There are many different locations in NYC for Kayaking during Summer to Fall but PIER 26 is considered the “Granddaddy” of NYC’s free-kayaking scene. I found out about this Kayaking adventure through my favorite TimeOut magazine.

I am always looking for new things to do and I know you do too. Let me answer some of the questions you might have to get you ready for a Kayaking Adventure.

1. What is Kayaking?

Kayaking is a watersport that involves paddling using a double-bladed oar and a small boat known as a kayak. Kayaking is a versatile sport that can be done in practically any body of water like rivers, lakes, oceans and even surf zones. Flatwater, choppy water, rapids, deep or shallow water all have different variations in the way and type of Kayak you use. Historically, this was used by the Eskimos for hunting – however, today kayaking is generally used for sport, fitness, and recreation.

2. Can you Kayak?

Like cycling, it’s relatively simple to pick up. Within a few hours, you’ll be paddling along happily. All you need to know is this :

  • Learn about different kind of strokes for movement in the water

  • Carry: Sunscreen, Spare paddle, Appropriate clothing, Helmet or hat, Whistle or signaling device, Drybag with necessities, Water and snacks, Proper footwear, Self-rescue devices, River knife
