Summer trip to Carlsbad California strawberry farms

Summer trip to Carlsbad California strawberry farms

Strawberry picking

A farm includes the passion of the farmer’s heart, the interest of the farm’s customers, the biological activity in the soil, the pleasantness of the air about the farm — it’s everything touching, emanating from, and supplying that piece of landscape.
— Joel Salatin

Hey! You are from India, you might have grown up on a farm right? Is your dad a farmer? Ummm, no. My dad is not a farmer and I did not grow up on a farm. Actually, as a kid, many of my friends might tell stories about growing up on farms, by a pond, riding on a tractor but for me, it was very fascinating to hear about it. I am from the capital city of Gujarat, Gandhinagar which is a bureaucratic city. Neither is it a big city like Mumbai nor is it a village. Though, it used to be a farm patch when my mother was a kid.

I remember my mother narrating to my stories about how she and her brothers used to walk across lush green farms on their way to school. The place where my school Mount Carmel Convent School stands tall now used to be the biggest farm patch in the city. But, all these have just been stories for me as, by the time I was born, my home city was one of the best planned manmade cities in India. However, farms fascinate me and so my recent trip to Carlsbad strawberry farm brings a big smile on my face. It is one of those childhood fantasies that turned reality.

tips to pick best strawberries

  • Wash and sanitize your hands before you start picking strawberries

  • Pick a particular row and follow the direction from start to end.

  • Do not jump from one row to another as it can damage the plants.

  • Only pick full red ripe strawberries. Strawberries do not grow once they are off the plant.

  • Hold the stem approximately 1-inch above the berry and pluck it to avoid bruising the berry.

  • Sever the stem with pressure from your thumbnail while slightly twisting the stem.

  • Pick the ones that are out in the sun.

  • Size does not matter, ripeness does.

  • Enjoy eating strawberries while picking them
